Britain’s foremost fashion designer, Paul Smith, has the superhero origin story of fashion labels, as far as we’re concerned. A warehouse worker in Nottingham, Paul Smith had no intention of entering the world of luxury men's fashion. His true passion was in sport and he was on the way to becoming a professional racing cyclist until a severe accident shattered this dream at the age of 17. It was during his six months in the hospital that he became friends with the local art college students who introduced him to fashion through talks of art and music. With the encouragement of his girlfriend and now wife, Pauline Denyer, Paul opened his first boutique in Nottingham, 1970. After taking evening classes and tailoring and the support of Pauline, who graduated from the RCA in fashion, he was able to create his stunning menswear collection and become featured on Paris’ catwalks in 1976.
‘Classic with a twist’ is the brand’s mantra. Over the years, men's Paul Smith clothing has treated the world his unique melding of classical and contemporary. Formal wear from Paul Smith for men takes the form of bold shirts and jackets as well as an eclectic footwear range that takes inspiration from both fine art and everyday life. Paul Smith is on a mission to shape the world with his eccentric, colourful vision. The dry, British sense of humour that underpins his exquisite collection of designer menswear makes for edgy, quirky aesthetics that never veer off the edge. It’s a razor-sharp line that Paul Smith dances on masterfully.
Paul Smith for men is proud to be different and the impact of his quality menswear range can be seen around the world in 70 countries with 66 stores in the UK alone. Truly independent, Paul Smith owns the majority of his company and has won several awards for his creativity including Designer of the Year at GQ four years in a row and Outstanding Achievement at the British Fashion Awards in 2011. His designs have been featured in other forms of art such as cinema, designing the costumes for Men In Black and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He was also the official T-Shirt designer for several of Bowie’s albums, kindred eccentric spirits. Look out for his signature artistic stripe and multi-stripe design aesthetic and many of the brands sweatshirts, knitwear and wider collection.
