Cristóbal Balenciaga grew up in a small town in the Spanish region of Gipuzkoa. Raised by his widowed mother, Balenciaga had no formal training but gained experience from his mother who was a seamstress. Despite this lack of formal training, Balenciaga successfully opened his first boutique in San Sebastián in 1919, where the boutique gained notoriety amongst Spanish royalty and the aristocracy. Cristobal went on to open stores in Madrid and Barcelona. The boutiques were originally called "Eisa" after his mother's maiden name, but they had to relocate to Paris during the Spanish Civil War. The staunch Cristóbal Balenciaga, however, reopened in Paris in 1937 and officially inaugurated the House of Balenciaga.
