There isn’t a single brand out there with as monumental a legacy as Italian fashion house Versace.
Known for its opulence and unapologetic glamour, Gianni Versace’s luxury label has only ever accepted the best. Actually, no. The best doesn’t cut it. Gianni Versace is one of the world’s rare alchemists who, through precise image curation, has created the most widely-known yet exclusive label and has dominated the world of fashion ever since the brand’s launch in 1978. Making clothes for the likes of Elton John, Michael Jackson and Princess Diana, Gianna Versace has earned his title ‘Rock n Roll’ designer.
Of course, his substance doesn’t just lie in his image. Gianna Versace used his brand to innovate and accomplish huge success using unorthodox methods which were uncommon at the time. It sounds obvious now, but Versace was one of the first people to incorporate multiple elements into a single design, combing lace, leather and Swarovski crystals into a single invention. Such a mythic designer can only have a tragic end to match as his assassination by crazed fan Andrew Cunanan on the mansion of Versace’s California doorstep was one of the biggest headlines of 1997.
Today, Versace’s legacy lives on as his sister Donatella took over the brand as the lead creative and has continued to innovate. The brand enjoys global success with 1500 boutiques open worldwide and a turnover of €669 million in 2016.
